This is Diwali season. KP and I were strolling around the busy streets of Coimbatore city, last Sunday clicking some Photos . This trash bin was kept in the entrance of a shopping complex. I'm a no-smoke campaigner. No, I don't belong to any group. But I make sure, my friends and acquaintances don't smoke. Help them or guide them to stop smoking and recommend or guide them to consultants. I'm highly allergic to smoke. Even a slightest tint of the smell can make me cough out my lungs.

When I used to take classroom sessions, I'd always tell my trainees to smoke 15 minutes before they enter the classroom. Most of the times, the chain smokers smoke at the last moment and would enter the classroom. The AC will be more than enough for the air to get circulated inside the classroom.

Initially, it was difficult for the trainees to adhere to. It's not that they disobeyed, but just that they were used to or addicted to it. They didn't have problem with the other trainers. When they found me coughing continuously and unable to take classroom sessions, they started walking out of the classroom. Usually, my trainees never wanted to miss my classroom sessions. So all they had to end up doing was to smoke well before and clear their trachea / mouth before they entered the class. Though it started slowly, I have known many friends, who have reduced smoking at least by 1 cigar during that time. I don't know if they still adhere to it since, I'm in touch with them only online.

But even now, my friends will never visit me after they have smoked. They know, I simply and plainly refuse to converse with them if they have smoked.

On seeing this model, I literally wanted to explain the big gathering in the complex, since I found it kept in a corner where not many people could notice it.

Since KP strongly advised that it would cause security issues especially during festive season (Coimbatore underwent the trauma of mulitple blasts in the recent past) and that unorganized and preplanned meetings would cause disturbances, I had to stop thinking about that.

Let's not forget the west has its variant of 'Confucianism/Legalism'. It's called the 'protestant ethic'.(ref, Weber's 'The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism'. Whilst Protestantism may not be the main fuel behind western, or American, economic advance at present, that which it blinded people to is that which determines much of what they see at present. However, with western democracy, it had the effect of softening the negative impact of the protestant ethnic.
